RosBREED
RosBREED integrates genomics, genetics, and breeding to enable DNA-informed selection and trait discovery in rosaceous crops including almond, apple, apricot, blackberry, peach, pear, plum, raspberry, rose, strawberry, sweet cherry, and sour cherry.
Key Features:
- Genomic integration: Use of genome-wide scanning platforms to identify loci associated with disease resistance and horticultural quality across rosaceous crops.
- DNA diagnostics: Development and application of DNA diagnostic tests for parental selection, pre-breeding for disease resistance, and advancement of elite seedlings.
- Comprehensive breeding translation: Coordination of multi-institutional efforts to translate genomic discoveries into DNA-informed breeding strategies.
- Collaborative networks: International partnerships between researchers and breeders to validate and deploy genetic markers and diagnostic assays.
Scientific Applications:
- Pre-breeding for disease resistance: Use of diagnostic markers and genome scans to introgress and select resistance traits, for example addressing cherry powdery mildew in the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
- Parental selection and seedling advancement: Marker-based selection to choose optimal parents and advance elite seedlings with desired horticultural traits.
- Trait discovery and cultivar development: Genome-wide analyses to accelerate identification of loci controlling quality and resilience for development of new cultivars.
Methodology:
Application of genome-wide scanning platforms and DNA diagnostic tests to integrate genomic data into selection decisions and parental choice.
