RxNorm API
RxNorm provides normalized names for clinical drugs and mappings to external drug vocabularies to enable standardized electronic exchange of drug information.
Key Features:
- Standardized Nomenclature: Provides normalized names and standard concepts for clinical drugs to unify drug representation.
- Vocabulary Mappings: Establishes links between RxNorm concepts and external drug vocabularies such as First Databank, Micromedex, Gold Standard Drug Database, and Multum.
- System Mediation: Mediates message exchange between systems that use different software or vocabularies by supplying common identifiers and mappings.
Scientific Applications:
- Electronic drug information exchange: Enables safe and efficient electronic exchange of clinical drug information across healthcare systems.
- Pharmacy management and drug-interaction software integration: Supports mapping of commercial vocabularies to standardized RxNorm concepts for pharmacy management and drug interaction systems.
- Patient safety and clinical decision support: Reduces naming-related ambiguities to support patient safety and improve quality of care.
Methodology:
Normalizes clinical drug names and creates mappings between RxNorm concepts and external drug vocabularies (First Databank, Micromedex, Gold Standard Drug Database, Multum) to enable mediation between heterogeneous systems.
