SleepCycles
SleepCycles detects and characterizes NREM and REM sleep cycles from polysomnographically assessed sleep staging data to enable standardized analysis of ultradian variations in sleep microstructure.
Key Features:
- Cycle Detection: Identifies NREM-REM sleep cycles from polysomnographically assessed sleep staging data.
- Subdivision into Percentiles: Subdivides each NREM and REM period into equal-duration percentiles to allow temporal normalization across cycles of differing durations.
- Adapted Criteria: Applies detection criteria adapted from Feinberg and Floyd (1979) for cycle identification.
Scientific Applications:
- Fine-Grained Analysis: Enables fine-grained analyses of ultradian variations in sleep microstructure, including sleep spindles and arousals, using detected NREM-REM cycles.
- Electroencephalographic Feature Analysis: Facilitates examination of amplitude- and frequency-specific electroencephalographic features during NREM and REM periods.
Methodology:
Implemented in the R programming environment; identification of NREM-REM cycles from polysomnographic sleep staging data; subdivision of each NREM and REM period into equal-duration percentiles; use of detection criteria adapted from Feinberg and Floyd (1979) to define cycles.
