Tallo

Tallo provides a global, georeferenced database of tree allometry and crown architecture measurements for ecological analysis and forest carbon estimation.

Key Features:

  • Extensive Data Collection: The database comprises 498,838 records from 61,856 globally distributed sites, including stem diameter, height, and crown radius measurements.
  • Georeferenced Measurements: Records are georeferenced to enable spatially explicit analyses and integration with geospatial data.
  • Taxonomic Standardization: 88% of trees are identified to species level, covering 5,163 species across 1,453 genera and 187 plant families.
  • Global Coverage: The dataset spans all major forested and non-forested biomes, providing broad ecological context.

Scientific Applications:

  • Forest Structure and Dynamics: Supports testing theoretical models such as metabolic scaling theory and analyses of individual-tree contributions to forest structure and dynamics.
  • Carbon Stock Estimation: Enables estimation of forest carbon stocks and quantification of associated uncertainties.
  • Remote Sensing Integration: Georeferenced tree measurements can be integrated with remote sensing imagery to improve forest monitoring and ecological assessments.
  • Allometric Plasticity Analyses: Facilitates investigation of limits of tree allometric plasticity along environmental gradients.
  • Maximum Tree Height Modeling: Supports modeling of global variations in maximum attainable tree height.

Methodology:

Data were collected and standardized to ensure consistency and reliability.
