TeaMiD

TeaMiD provides an extensive catalog of simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers for Camellia sinensis to support marker-assisted breeding and genetic analyses.

Key Features:

  • Extensive SSR marker catalog: Contains 935,547 SSR markers identified from recently published tea genomes and from genomic sequences, RNA-seq, Genomic Survey Sequences (GSS), Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs), and organelle genomes (chloroplasts and mitochondria).
  • Validated SSR markers and diversity analysis: A set of 82 SSRs was selected for validation, with a subset of six primers showing four to six alleles (average five alleles per locus) across 36 tea genotypes and polymorphic information content (PIC) values of 0.61–0.76.
  • Comprehensive data integration: Integrates nuclear genome data and transcriptome sequences from 17 wild Camellia species to support comparative and evolutionary analyses.

Scientific Applications:

  • Marker-assisted selection: Enables use of SSR markers for marker-assisted breeding and selection in tea improvement programs.
  • Genetic diversity studies: Facilitates assessment of allelic diversity and genetic relationships within and between tea genotypes.
  • Breeding for agronomic and quality traits: Supports development of new cultivars targeting disease resistance, improved yield, and enhanced quality using validated SSR markers.
  • Population genetics and conservation: Provides data for population structure analyses and conservation studies across cultivated and wild Camellia species.
  • Comparative genomics: Supports comparative analyses using integrated nuclear and transcriptome datasets from multiple Camellia species.

Methodology:

SSR markers were identified from recently published tea genomes and publicly available sequences (RNA-seq, GSS, ESTs) and organelle genomes; a literature search compiled validated SSRs; selected SSRs were experimentally validated across diverse tea genotypes.
