VectorMap-GR

VectorMap-GR integrates entomological and epidemiological surveillance data and maps spatiotemporal vector dynamics and insecticide resistance to support monitoring and control of vector-borne diseases in Greece and the Mediterranean Basin.

Key Features:

• Integrative surveillance system: Integrates entomological and epidemiological surveillance datasets from regional sources to consolidate fragmented data into a unified database.
• Controlled vocabularies (ontologies): Employs controlled vocabularies and ontologies to ensure consistent annotation and interoperability of surveillance datasets.
• Database and GIS mapping (ArcGIS): Provides a database coupled with GIS mapping that leverages ArcGIS technology for spatial storage, querying, and visualization of surveillance data.
• Data transformation and analysis: Transforms raw surveillance data into operational products via customizable maps, charts, tables, reports, and sophisticated query filters for detailed analysis.
• Comprehensive data access: Aggregates mosquito fauna composition, abundance, and spatiotemporal dynamics; insecticide resistance status and underlying mechanisms; occurrence of vector-borne disease pathogens and infections in vectors, animals, and humans; and georeferenced datasets of physical features relevant to mosquito breeding sites.

Scientific Applications:

• Regional vector control program (Crete pilot 2018–2020): Piloted in the Region of Crete from 2018 to 2020, where it provided detailed insights into vector dynamics and resistance patterns to inform mosquito control interventions and support reductions in vector populations and prevention of human VBD occurrences.

Methodology:

Collection and integration of diverse entomological and epidemiological datasets, use of controlled vocabularies/ontologies, and application of GIS technology (ArcGIS) for spatial data integration and visualization.
