WEBiKEY

WEBiKEY enables construction of web-based interactive identification keys to support taxonomic identification of species using morphological characters.

Key Features:

  • Interactive identification keys: Enables development of web-based interactive keys that present morphological characters for specimen identification.
  • Decision structures: Supports navigation through series of dichotomous choices and other decision-making processes for identification.
  • Taxonomic scope: Allows construction of keys tailored to any group of species.
  • Implementation: Implemented using Microsoft ASP.NET technologies with an SQL Server database and operates on Windows-based hosting environments.
  • Demonstration dataset: Applied to the temperate woody bamboo genus Kuruna (Poaceae) to distinguish among seven species using morphological traits.

Scientific Applications:

  • Taxonomic identification: Produces interactive keys for identifying specimens to species level using morphological characters.
  • Biodiversity and conservation: Supports biodiversity studies and conservation by enabling accurate species identification across ecosystems.
  • Systematics and taxonomy development: Facilitates creation of identification resources for taxonomic and systematic research.

Methodology:

Implemented using Microsoft ASP.NET with an SQL Server backend and deployed on Windows-based hosting environments.
