YOGY

YOGY retrieves orthologous proteins across nine eukaryotic organisms and aggregates orthology and Gene Ontology (GO) annotations to support comparative genomics and functional inference.

Key Features:

  • Ortholog retrieval: Retrieves orthologous proteins across Homo sapiens, Mus musculus, Rattus norvegicus, Arabidopsis thaliana, Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorhabditis elegans, Plasmodium falciparum, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
  • Input types: Accepts gene or protein identifiers from any of the supported species as query input.
  • Integrated orthology sources: Aggregates orthology data from KOGs (Eukaryotic Orthologous Groups), Inparanoid, HomoloGene, and OrthoMCL.
  • Yeast curated orthologs: Incorporates a curated table specifically detailing orthologs between Saccharomyces cerevisiae (budding yeast) and Schizosaccharomyces pombe (fission yeast).
  • Functional annotation retrieval: Retrieves associated Gene Ontology (GO) terms for identified orthologous proteins to aid functional inference.
  • Evidence aggregation: Combines orthology evidence across multiple databases to present comprehensive orthologous relationship information.

Scientific Applications:

  • Functional inference: Supports hypothesis generation about gene function by providing orthologous proteins and GO annotations across model organisms.
  • Evolutionary analysis: Enables comparative genomics and investigation of evolutionary relationships among the nine eukaryotic species.
  • Annotation transfer and curation: Assists curators in transferring annotations and rapidly identifying relevant GO terms for literature curation and database annotation.
  • Cross-species research support: Facilitates selection of orthologs for experimental design and interpretation across diverse model organisms and pathogens.

Methodology:

Given a gene or protein identifier, YOGY queries and integrates orthology data from KOGs, Inparanoid, HomoloGene, OrthoMCL and a curated Saccharomyces cerevisiae–Schizosaccharomyces pombe orthologs table, and retrieves associated Gene Ontology (GO) terms.
