IMGT, the international ImMunoGeneTics information system

IMGT, the international ImMunoGeneTics information system, provides a reference resource for standardized immunogenetics and immunoinformatics data and analysis of immunoglobulins (IG), T cell receptors (TR), major histocompatibility (MH) complexes, IgSF and MhSF proteins across vertebrate and invertebrate species.

Key Features:

  • IMGT-ONTOLOGY: Implements axioms and concepts that integrate genes, sequences, and three-dimensional structures for consistent immunogenetic annotation.
  • Standardized nomenclature and labels: Supplies standardized keywords, labels and nomenclature for classification of IG, TR, MH, IgSF and MhSF entities.
  • Unique numbering systems: Provides unique numbering schemes and the IMGT Colliers de Perles numerotation method for sequence and structural comparison.
  • Databases and tools: Comprises seven databases and 17 online tools for analysis of genomic and expressed IG and TR repertoires.
  • NGS processing: Supports processing of next-generation sequencing (NGS) high-throughput data for repertoire analysis.
  • Three-dimensional structure integration: Integrates three-dimensional structural data with sequence and gene information for immunogenetic analysis.
  • IMGT/mAb-DB: Provides curated data specifically addressing therapeutic antibodies and fusion proteins used in immunological applications (FPIA).
  • External database integration: Links and integrates sequence, genome, and structural immunogenetics data with EBI, DDBJ and NCBI resources.

Scientific Applications:

  • Adaptive immune repertoire analysis: Enables analysis of genomic and expressed IG and TR repertoires involved in adaptive immune responses.
  • Mutation analysis in hematologic malignancies: Supports mutation characterization workflows relevant to leukemia and lymphoma research.
  • Antibody engineering and humanization: Provides standardized sequence and structural frameworks used in antibody engineering and humanization.
  • Therapeutic antibody and fusion protein characterization: Facilitates analysis and curation of therapeutic antibodies and fusion proteins (FPIA) via IMGT/mAb-DB.
  • Veterinary and medical immunogenetics: Supports comparative and translational studies across vertebrate and invertebrate species for veterinary and medical research.

Methodology:

Uses IMGT-ONTOLOGY axioms and concepts to integrate genes, sequences and three-dimensional structures, applies standardized keywords, labels, nomenclature, unique numbering and IMGT Colliers de Perles, and provides databases and online tools to analyze genomic and expressed IG and TR repertoires including processing of NGS high-throughput data.
