GlycoCoO, the GlycoConjugate Ontology, is a semantic framework designed to address the significant gap in the digital representation and annotation of glycoproteomics data. Despite the rapid advancements and the increasing volume of data in glycoproteomics—encompassing proteins, their attached glycans, and glycosylation sites—a notable lack of standardization has hindered the integration of these findings into databases or data repositories. This challenge stems from the complex nature of glycoproteins and the intricacies of glycan annotations, requiring a versatile standard that can accurately represent glycan structures (either as complete entities or compositions), glycoforms on specific glycosylation sites and account for partially missing site information or the abundance ratios of glycans within a glycoform.

GlycoCoO meets this need by providing a comprehensive ontology capable of representing glycoproteomics data within triplestores, facilitating data exchange and interoperability. It is specifically designed to cater to the diverse requirements of glycoproteomics research, including the representation of complex glycan structures, glycoform variations, and quantitative aspects of glycosylation at specific sites, even in cases where complete site mapping is unavailable.
