MassSpecWavelet

The software tool "MassSpecWavelet" addresses the challenge of false positives in peak detection algorithms for mass spectrometry (MS) spectra, especially for peaks with low amplitudes. Unlike traditional methods that rely on baseline correction and smoothing, this tool introduces a continuous wavelet transform (CWT)-based peak detection algorithm. The algorithm identifies peaks based on amplitude and characteristic shapes, utilizing a shape-matching function that provides a 'goodness of fit' coefficient for more robust peak identification. By transforming the spectrum into wavelet space, the algorithm simplifies the pattern-matching problem, effectively separating signal from spike and colored noise. This approach enhances the effective signal-to-noise ratio, eliminating the need for baseline removal or peak smoothing preprocessing steps before peak detection.
