SAMT

The South Australian Macrobenthic Traits (SAMT) database is a pioneering initiative to fill a significant gap in studying marine biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, particularly in temperate Australian waters. Trait-based assessments are increasingly recognized for their ability to offer insights into the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In marine soft sediments, macrobenthic fauna plays a crucial role as providers of ecosystem functions. However, the lack of comprehensive trait classification systems, especially outside well-studied regions like the North Atlantic, has limited the scope and potential of such functional assessments.

Key Features of the SAMT Database:

Comprehensive Trait Information: The SAMT database encompasses 13 distinct traits and 54 trait modalities, covering various aspects such as the life history, morphology, physiology, and behavior of macrobenthic fauna. This extensive range of traits ensures a holistic understanding of the functional roles played by these organisms.

- Focus on South Australian Macrobenthic Fauna: Specifically tailored for macrobenthic fauna found in South Australia, the SAMT database fills a critical geographic gap in marine biodiversity research. It provides detailed trait information for over 250 macrobenthic taxa, representing a significant step in understanding the region's marine biodiversity.

- Fuzzy Coding Procedure: The inclusion of outcomes from a fuzzy coding procedure enhances the database's utility by allowing for the representation of variability and uncertainty in trait expression. This approach acknowledges the complexity and dynamism of biological traits.

- R Package for Accessibility and Analysis: Accompanying the SAMT database is an R package, making the database not only accessible but also analyzable within a famous and powerful statistical computing environment. Researchers can utilize this package to conduct analyses on functional diversity, ecosystem functioning, and more, leveraging the comprehensive data provided by SAMT.
